Alternators generate electricity. Your Chevy has numerous electrical systems, from windshield wipers to headlights, and all require electricity. Alternators will gradually wear down like any other component and will need replacement. As your Chevy dealer, we want to tell you about some signs that you need to see us for an alternator repair.
Signs That You Need an Alternator Repair at Your Chevy Dealer
Damaged Wiring or Connectors
The power produced by your alternator has to be transported to the systems that require it. Your Chevy has a huge quantity of wiring that spreads out from the alternator in a network that connects all the systems to their power supply. These wires have connections, relays, and switches that control the flow of electricity.
The wiring in your engine is protected against heat and dirt by thick plastic insulation. Despite this protection, wires can become fragile with age and fray. Connectors can rust or break, and relays can fail. Any of these issues will cause problems in the electrical system. Our technicians can test your electrical system and replace worn or damaged parts.
Electrical Glitches
A random electrical issue, for example, a radio that doesn’t work, can occur at any time. There are many possible causes for this, but if the issue doesn’t repeat itself, it can safely be ignored. A more serious problem is the appearance of electrical issuew that increase in frequency and appear to spread throughout your car. This type of problem is usually due to a worn alternator.
As the alternator ages, its ability to produce electricity declines. This decline is gradual but irreversible. Eventually, the alternator won’t be able to supply enough power for all your car’s systems. When this happens, electrical glitches will appear. These glitches are caused by the need to shift the limited available power from system to system as needed. Our technicians will examine your alternator and install a new one if necessary.
Grinding Noises
Several components can make grinding noises if they’re wearing out. If the grinding sound comes from the engine, the most likely cause is a damaged alternator bearing. The alternator generates power by spinning, and two bearings attached to it allow the alternator to move. Over time, these bearings can wear out or get damaged.
A damaged alternator bearing will make a grinding noise as the alternator spins. The damaged bearing reduces the alternator’s ability to produce power. The bearing can also cause the failure of the second bearing, and your alternator will suffer damage. We can examine the bearing and replace a damaged one very quickly.
