1. Lake Maurepas, LA

Located roughly halfway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans in southern Louisiana, Lake Maurepas is a popular fishing spot for visitors from the surrounding areas. This lake boasts a surface area of a little under 60,000 acres and is home to some excellent specimens of bream, catfish, crappie, and bass. Although less visited than neighboring Lake Pontchartrain, this is a great place for anyone in search of a quiet spot away from the noise of the city.

Getting to the shores of Lake Maurepas from downtown Brookhaven takes a little over an hour by car, driving a distance of just 95 miles along route I-55 S. This lake is fed by four different rivers and is connected to Lake Pontchartrain by the South Manchac and North Manchac passes. Apart from fishing, Lake Maurepas is also a popular spot for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and picnicking at the designated spots in the surrounding park.

2. Lake Pontchartrain, LA

Spanning a surface area of 630 square miles, Lake Pontchartrain is located just north of New Orleans and across neighboring Lake Maurepas. Given its proximity, it is a very popular fishing destination among New Orleanians, although there are visitors from neighboring states who come here to catch some excellent specimens of trout, bull sharks, catfish, redfish, bass, flounder, and even sheepshead. Although there are fishing piers along the coast, hiring a local guide or a fishing charter is always better.

Getting to the shores of Lake Pontchartrain from Brookhaven takes around two hours by car, driving south along route I-55. Once you reach the town of Mandeville, you will see the enormous Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, considered the longest continuous bridge constructed over water in the entire world. Apart from fishing, other popular activities in and around the lake include picnicking, boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and sailing.

3. Homochitto National Forest, MS

Featuring a surface area of almost 200,000 acres, the Homochitto National Forest is one of the best-known recreation areas in southern Mississippi. With a series of lakes, streams, rivers, and impoundments, this natural escape attracts anglers from Brookhaven and other nearby towns, offering a wide variety of fish species, including bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and spotted bass. Getting here from the Brookhaven city center takes just 40 minutes by car driving along route US-84 W.
